'H' Side Story
Episode Three, 20th March 2005, Channel 4, UK. 25 mins long.
- Producer: Heather Darroch
- Directors: Southan Morris & Ted Hill
The programme follows 'H' Watkins from Steps through his year studying musical theatre.
Mr Quast was invited by the Royal Acadamy to go teach for a day and pass on some of his vast experience. This is not the first time Philip has spent a day teaching at one of the major acting schools. He really enjoys it and feels it is important that more experienced actors should take time out and spend time sharing their knowledge and experience with young promising actors of the future.
Unfortunately for 'H' he has decided to sing 'Stars' a song and a role Philip's perfomance of, is world famous.
On advise from fellow students and mostly his tutor, he changes the his mind and performs 'Giants in the Sky' sung by Jack from Stephen Sondheim's ' Into The Woods', a musical Philip has also actually perfomed in, in Australia playing the roles of the Wolf/ Cinderella's Prince.
It was very interesting to hear what Philip had to say and how he encourage the students and told how well they had done.
Some advise he gave:
Of singing he said, "Sounds ten times better if you don't worry, about what you sing".
About performing, "If you go for it in a big way you can fall flat on your face, absolutely flat on your face, but you can't skirt around because you'll never try anything and will just generalise, so you have to learn to go for something"!
'H' said afterward he really enjoyed what he did with Philip and that it was great and bless him afterwards Philip took him to one side and said, 'Well done'!

Lyrics of 'Giants in the Sky'
- There are giants in the sky!
- There are big tall terrible giants
- in the sky!
- When you're way up high
- And you look below
- At the world you left
- And the things you know,
- Little more than a glance
- Is enough to show you
- Just how small you are.
- When you're way up high
- And you're on your own
- In a world like none
- That you've ever known
- Where the sky is lead
- And the earth is stone.
- You're free, to do
- Whatever pleases you
- Exploring things you'd never dare
- 'Cause you don't care,
- When suddenly there's
- A big tall terrible Giant at the door
- A big tall lady Giant
- sweeping the floor.
- And she gives you food
- And she gives you rest
- And she draws you close
- To her Giant breast
- And you know things now
- that you never knew before,
- Not 'till the sky.
- Only just when you've made
- A friend and all,
- And you know she's big
- But you don't feel small,
- Someone bigger than her
- Comes along the hall
- To swallow you for lunch
- And your heart is lead
- And your stomach stone
- And you're really scared
- Being all alone.....
- And it's then that you miss
- All the things you've known
- And the world you've left
- And the little you own
- The fun is done.
- You steal what you can and run.
- And you scramble down,
- And you look below
- And the world you know
- Begins to grow.
- The roof, the house, and your mother at the door
- The roof, the house, and the world you never thought to explore.
- And you think of all of the things you've seen,
- And you wish that you could live in between,
- And you're back again,
- Only different than before,
- After the sky.
- There are giants in the sky
- There are big tall terrible, awesome, scary, wonderful
- Giants in the sky!
