We would like to thank Philip for taking the time to complete the questionnaire for the Continuum whilst performing in previews for the Secret Garden at Stratford.
1. Which Musical role was the most demanding vocally and why?
All of them!! But they get harder as I get older. Partially because I'm ageing and partially because the demands I put on myself are greater. The 10th Anniversary was the hardest and most frightening.
2. Which Musical role was the most demanding acting wise and why?
"The Fix" was the most physically demanding and tiring. "Sunday " the most difficult acting because I wasn't an experienced enough classical actor at that stage.
3. Is there any Musical role you would love the opportunity to perform and why?
No. I don't think like that. But new ones are always preferable so I can be part of the creative process, which I love.
4. What is your favourite Musical song and why?
- "Lost in the Stars" by (Kurt Weill/Maxwell Anderson) from the musical Lost In The Stars 1949.
- And "Hey There " by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross from the musical Pajama Game.
They are beautiful......
(Read Lyrics to both Songs)
5. Would you play the role of Javert on Stage ever again, if no why?
No. Nothing will surpass that night at Albert Hall so it was goodbye.
6. Do you think Musical Theatre should do more to help families go to the shows i.e. reduced ticket prices for those aged 10 and under?
Yes. But they should have designated family days so adults can feel relaxed with their kids. I think all theatre should be accessible to kids not just musicals.
7. How do you feel about the state of theatre in Australia concerning either Musical or Non Musical plays?
I wish there were permanent companies. I think there is not enough subsidy and actors Aren't paid enough. The companies are institutions of learning but they now are under tremendous pressure to cast "stars".
8. What was most difficult about performing Shakespearian Comedy (Loves Labours Lost) in comparison with one of his Tragedies (Troilus and Cressida)?
I had fun in "Loves Labours Lost". I didn't like "Troilus" and was very unhappy on it.
9. Although you are performing with the RSC once more but in a Musical would you like to have the opportunity to perform more Shakespeare and if yes what roles and why?
Yes Leontes. (The Winter's Tale). I think it's in my field. (read synopsis)
10. What do you think the difference's are if any between Australian and British theatre?
On the whole I think Australian acting is bolder and more "front-footed!. It tends to be physically bolder and falls halfway between American and English. We are an amalgamation of those two cultures.
11. Having acted in a few films would you like the opportunity to work more in the medium, if yes why?
Yes and no. I am patient. I am doing theatre at the moment because I am "between ages" not young, not middle aged. I will do more film when I get a bit older. Theatre requires masses of discipline - i.e. keeping sober and fit and it scares me when I see many of my friends can no longer do theatre.
12. If Mr. Mackintosh ever produced a film version of Les Miserable and offered you the role of Javert would you except?
I don't think he'll ever do it.
13. Having performed in a few Australian TV production Soaps, Drama's and Children's TV do you think that Australian TV should be doing more to promoted and encourage high quality home made programmes rather than just import foreign programmes, if yes why?
Of course - but America rules the world and where in the time of doco-dramas, reality T.V. and celebrity gossip. I think we are having the same problem as England.
14. If the opportunity of a second series or one off drama for Ultraviolet came up would you play Pearse if offered the part?
Yes. But it won't happen now the time has passed.
15. What was it about the roles of Pearse J Harman and Michael Muldoon that made you want to portray them?
I love complicated people - they're both dying and they were both NEW and innovative programmes.
16. Would you ever consider producing a CD if the right material came along that was either, new and fresh or from rarely produced productions that hadn't been sung on other singers compilation CD's, if no why and if yes how close are you to producing it?
Yes, I have been collecting material for two years and I suspect by the end of 2001 I'll have a CD out of NEW and interesting material.
